Speaker

What iconic movie was Ronald Reagan offered a part in shortly after finishing his second term as president? The answer to that at the end of the show. Welcome to Quizzical, the trivia show where memory, instinct, and educated guessing form an uneasy alliance. I'm Scott Strosahl, and today we've brought together two sharp minds who believe they know more than the other person. Science will decide. In today's games, we'll evaluate starts and stops, and along the way, we'll also crown another people's champion with the answer to last week's listener question. So play along, pause if you need to, disagree loudly. That's tradition. We've got questions, we've got answers, and we've got at least one fact today that will take the place in your brain where you used to store a password you really need. Now let's meet our two contestants and get to the trivia. First up we have Bryce, a student from Virginia. Welcome, Bryce. Hi. Good to be here. Uh what are you studying? Computer science. Computer science, okay. And are you how far along in the process are you? Just starting? Are you about to graduate? Well, I hope I'm gonna graduate soon. And what are you hoping to do? Anything in particular? Just any sort of computer science? What?

Speaker 2

Well, uh I enjoy programming, so maybe some kind of maybe software or web development.

Speaker

Um and I understand you know a lot about royalty-free music libraries?

Speaker 2

Oh yeah. Yeah, I'm a fanatic of Incompitech and uh Silverman Sound Studios.

Speaker

What do you use royalty free music for? Anything in particular, any projects that you use them for?

Speaker 2

Um mostly my YouTube videos and also just listening to it.

Speaker

Sure, yeah. So so you have a YouTube channel then?

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker

What's your what's your channel? You want to plug it?

Speaker 2

Pac Valheam. P-A-C-V-A-L-H-A-M.

Speaker

Alright. Um, and then next up is Florian from Germany. Welcome, Florian.

Speaker 1

Yeah, thanks for having me.

Speaker

It's good to be here. Yeah, and it is Florian, right? Is that the right pronunciation?

Speaker 1

Yeah, it's Florian in German, but Florian is Florian.

Speaker

Florian. All right, well then I'm gonna say, and next up is Florian from Germany. Welcome, Florian. Yeah, thanks for uh thanks for having me.

Speaker 1

It's nice to be here.

Speaker

Um so Florian solves uh word puzzles in his second language, which is definitely tricky. Um I've done some wordles in Spanish before, not in German, but in Spanish, and it's it's definitely harder. Yeah. Um you you obviously clearly know a lot more English than I know Spanish, so but uh yeah, how uh what's that like doing it in a second language?

Speaker 1

Yeah, you know, it's it started uh when when Wordle came out really big a few years ago. And like other puzzles, you know, Scrabble, the best Scrabble players, they all can play in other languages because it's a math game basically, and you just you just remember the words, you don't need the know the meaning. But for me it started with with Wordle, so because you can kind of figure out the word based on the clues, even if you don't know what the word means, right? If you have yellow and green letters, you can kind of figure it out. And then it kind of spiraled into doing like other uh daily puzzles, uh started doing the the the crosswords from the New York Times and So do you solve uh word puzzles in German as well then? Yeah, mainly crosswords if I have the time. But uh yeah, in German as well. Sure.

Speaker

Yeah, and and in non-word related things. I understand you know a lot about the history of the Rubik's Cube.

Speaker 1

Uh yeah, right. It's uh it's definitely a hobby of mine.

Speaker

Uh I'm not pretty fast like in comparison to the pros, but you'd probably be fast in comparison to most of the people listening to this.

Speaker 1

Yeah, sure.

Speaker

Uh but I always compared to me as well.

Speaker 1

I always find it more interesting like um the puzzle solving component than like the speed component, so I like to try try different shapes or different sizes of the twisty puzzles. Yeah, but it's pretty fun.

Game 1 - "The Buck Stops Here"

Speaker

Alright, cool. Now that we all know each other, are you ready for our first game? Let's go. Alright, for round one, we're starting with a game called The Buck Stops Here. Are you guys familiar with the phrase the buck stops here? I it's fine if you're not. It's a phrase that was popularized by President Truman. Um, and in this game, all of the answers will rhyme with buck. So all the answers are gonna rhyme with the word buck. I will describe a place that something might stop, and you have to identify what buck rhyme would stop there. And you have to answer as the blank stops here, the thing. So I'll give you an example. If I said all of the guests have had their fill of the various dishes brought by everyone else, you would answer the potluck stops here. Because potluck rhymes with buck, and after everybody's had their fill of the various dishes that are brought by everyone else, that's how a potluck works. So alright, so as you guys understand how it works, the answer is gonna rhyme with buck, and we're gonna answer with the blank stops here. I'm gonna describe where the thing would stop. Alright, so buzz into answer, but if you get it wrong, your opponent will have a chance to steal. Florian, your buzzer sounds like. And Bryce, your buzzer sounds like. Question one. After a long series of fortunate outcomes at the craps table, the shooter rolls a seven. Bryce. The luck stops here. The luck stops here. Very good, yes. Because they were getting lucky, and then a seven is when you lose, yep. Sure. Alright, next question. At the end of the legally allowed shift length, a driver pulls his big rig into a rest area. Ooh, Florian. The truck stops here? The truck stops here, very good, very good. That was really close. You guys buzzed in at almost the same time. Alright. Question three. A pond after a long flight in a V formation. Bryce. The duck stops here. Right. The duck stops here. Yes, very good. Okay, next question. After seeing its shadow, Punxitawny Phil pauses in fear. This is something you might not know about in Germany, admittedly. And it's a little bit tricky. I don't know. We may have stumped you guys. I have no clue. Alright, I'm gonna say no one gets that one. It was the woodchuck stops here. So Punxitawny Phil is a groundhog, but a groundhog is another name for a woodchuck. Alright, that's alright. Question number five. Sliding past the goalie's outstretched hand, the left wing's shot lands in the frozen net. Bryce.

Speaker 2

The puck stops here.

Speaker

The puck stops here. Very good. Yep. I think Florian might have known it too, but he was a little slower to buzz in.

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah, yeah. When I hear goal like my European mind goes to soccer or football.

Speaker

Right, which is why I said the frozen net. Because I was thinking, otherwise you're gonna be thinking soccer. Yep, yep. Alright. Next question. With fortunate timing, a flash of lightning appears as ACDC hits a B power chord and a crash symbol. Florian. Uh maybe the pluck stops here. Ooh, um, good guess. I can see where you get that, but um it's incorrect, Bryce.

Speaker 2

The Thunderstruck stops here. The Thunderstruck.

Speaker

Yep. I I I I see pluck pluck isn't a bad guess, but we were going for Thunderstruck, which is why it's ACDC. Yeah, yeah, right. And the the flash of lightning is the fortunate timing part. Yep, Thunderstruck. Alright. Next question. After a long day at the office, the man pulls his shirt tail out of his pants. Bryce.

Speaker 2

The tuck stops here.

Listener Question

Game 2 - "Chicken or Egg?"

Speaker

Very good. The tuck stops here. Well, good job, both of you, but especially good job to Bryce, who is one step closer to making the final. And Florian, you will have to win the next game to force a tiebreaker and keep your hopes alive. And now it's time for the answer to last week's listener question. Just as a reminder, the question was what do these four items have in common? A skeleton, a pet store, national treasure, and a zoo. Now the tricky one this time was National Treasure. You need to think of the movie National Treasure, and what those four things all have is cages. Skeleton has a rib cage, pet store, and a zoo obviously have cages, and National Treasure has Nicholas Cage, who is the main actor in the movie, so they all have cages. We had several people get the correct answer this time, probably a lot of fans of National Treasure, perhaps, but there can only be one winner, and this week's people's champion selected from those who submitted correct answers, is Cade Burt from Springfield. Now, interestingly, there's a lot of Springfields in the United States, and Cade did not specify which Springfield, but Cade Burt from Springfield is this week's People's Champion. We'll post that on all our socials so you can go share it with your friends and prove that you are a champion. Well done, Cade. And we're gonna have this week's listener question in just a second, but I want to mention that last week we posted over on our Patreon page for free for everyone a picture trivia round. So if you haven't seen that already, go check it out. Go to quizzical.fm and click on the link to Patreon. It's free to do this game. If you feel like signing up to support us there, that would be great as well. We really appreciate it. But go to patreon.com slash quizzicalfm or just go to quizzical.fm and click the link through from there. And now for this week's listener question, this one's gonna be sort of a math related question. It's a number sequence, and you just need to tell me the next number in the sequence. So the numbers today are 2, 8, 18, 32, 50, and what comes next. Those numbers again were 2, 8, 18, 32, 50. Which number comes next? If you think you know, send a message to people at quizzical.fm or go to quizzical.fm and click on the leave a voicemail button and you can submit your answer in audio form. And while we're speaking of the voicemail button, if you have something else you'd like to share, an interesting fact you learned, or maybe a trivia question for me, you can also go to quizzical.fm and leave a voicemail, and you might appear on a future show. Alright, and with that, it's time for our second game. Bryce, Florian, are you guys ready?

Speaker 1

Yes, sure.

Speaker

Alright, our second game today is called Chicken or Egg. In this game, I will give you two items, and you have to tell me which came first, or in other words, which was created first. Uh, we'll take turns on this one so you can put the buzzers down and feel free to talk it out before you answer. But if you're wrong, your opponent will get the point. So I'm just gonna give you two things, and you just tell me which one was created first.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker

Sure. Alright, so Florian, which came first? Dracula or Frankenstein?

Speaker 1

I feel like Frankenstein, the novel, was written like I don't know, late late 19th century, maybe early early 20th century. Maybe I'm way off, I don't know. I'm gonna say Dracula was before that. I feel like that's like a could be a legend or myth that's that's older, so I'm gonna go with with Dracula.

Speaker

Dracula? Sorry, that's incorrect. Frankenstein was 1818 and Dracula was 1897. Oh, okay, so yeah, Frankenstein was earlier than than you thought. Okay, Bryce, your question is Captain Crunch or Captain Kangaroo?

Speaker 2

Uh I'm going to guess Captain Crunch.

Speaker

Captain Crunch. Oh, that's incorrect. No, Captain Kangaroo was 1955 and Captain Crunch was 1963. So not too far apart, but yeah. Alright, Florian. Which came first? The drive-in theater or the drive-thru restaurant?

Speaker 1

I feel like it's gotta be the the movie theater. I feel like it's a bit a bit more obvious. I don't know. I'm gonna go with the theater. I feel like you could implement it really early.

Speaker

Okay, theater is correct. Very good. That's right. 1933 versus 1947 for the first drive-through restaurant. Alright. Bryce, this question's for you. Which came first? The Liberty Bell or Liberty Insurance?

Speaker 2

Well, the Liberty Bell was you know back, you know, when they're signing the declaration of independence, and I would think Liberty Insurance is more recent.

Speaker

The Liberty Bell is correct, yes. Very good. Alright, Florian, which came first? X-Men or X-Wings?

Speaker 1

Ooh, okay. So Star Wars is like 70s, right? If that's what you mean with X-Wing, I that's the only connection I have. Um so the X-Men comic comics, are they wit written earlier or later than like 1970? I feel like Marvel comics are pretty old, so I would I would suggest uh X-Men.

Speaker

That is correct. Yes. Good good reasoning. Yes, we were talking about Star Wars with X-Wings. Star Wars, that was 1977. Yes. And the X-Men first appeared in 1963. Very good. Alright, Bryce, this one's for you. Which came first? Mickey Mouse or Mickey Mantle?

Speaker 2

Mickey Mouse.

Speaker

Correct. That's right. Um 1928. Mickey Mantle was 19 was born in 1931. So not too long before, but very good. Alright, Florian, next question. Alright, which came first?

Speaker 1

College or that's a tough one for me. Both not like my my greatest sports areas. But uh I f I feel like I'm gonna go with with with baseball.

Speaker

Oh, unfortunately football was first, believe it or not. Yeah. Um college football started in 1869 and Major League Baseball in 1876.

Speaker 1

Wow.

Speaker

Both 19th century even. Yeah, they were they're pretty old. So, alright, well, Bryce, this is the final question. If you get this one right, you win. If you don't, Florian has a chance, a chance in the tiebreaker. So final question. No pressure, but lots of pressure. But all right, which came first, Bryce? MTV or PBS?

Speaker 2

Um I'm gonna say MTV.

Speaker

Oh, that's incorrect. Florian hangs on, he's still he's still in it. So PBS was 1970, and MTV was 1981. So after that, you guys are tied, so we have a tiebreaker for this game. So get your buzzers back out. Tiebreaker question. Which came first? Spider-Man 2 or the amazing Spider-Man 2? Floreon!

Speaker 1

So like this is it a trick question or not? I don't know. Uh so I'm gonna go with uh the amazing Spider-Man 2. Oh, incorrect!

Speaker

Spider-Man 2 was first. The amazing Spider-Man 2 was 10 years later, 2004 and 2014.

Speaker 2

Yep, and I would have guessed Spider-Man 2. So how would you?

Outro

Speaker

So you would have gotten it right anyways. Yep, okay. Oh no. Alright, and so after two games, Bryce is moving on to the final round at the end of the month. Congratulations to Bryce. Join us next week as two more competitors match wits for a chance at being crowned quizzical champion. But before we go, the answer to the question I asked at the beginning: what iconic movie was Ronald Reagan offered a part in shortly after finishing his second term as president? Do you guys have a guess? It's not for any points, but it's fine if you don't. Uh the movie was Back to the Future 3, and the part was as mayor of Hill Valley. Uh his casting would have fit well with the Western theme of the movie since Reagan was an actor in Western movies. And also, in the first Back to the Future movie, Doc from 1955 makes a comment about Ronald Reagan.

Speaker 1

Doc, you gotta believe me. Then tell me, future boy, who's president of the United States in 1985? Ronald Reagan.

Speaker 2

Ronald Reagan? The actor?

unknown

Ha!

Speaker 2

Then who's vice president? Jerry Lewis.

Speaker

So they joke about the fact that Reagan was president. So it would have been kind of funny for him to then be in the third movie, but he declined. Um, so now you know Ronald Reagan was almost the mayor of Hill Valley in Back to the Future 3. Something mildly impressive you can say at a party before anyone else has a chance. That's it for this week. And remember, knowledge doesn't have to matter to matter. I'm Scott, and this has been Quizzical.
