Speaker

Welcome to Quizzical, the trivia show where confidence frequently outruns accuracy. I'm Scott Strosahl, and today, four previous victors return. They've already proven they can win. Now they have to prove it wasn't a fluke. In today's games, we will test their knowledge and their patience, and things will be a little bit different than the head-to-head competitions of the last four weeks. We will have three games today. The winners of each of the first two games will earn an advantage for the third final elimination game, where the last man standing wins and will be crowned the second quizzical champion. Now, let's meet our

Contestant Introductions

Speaker

returning contestants. From episode one, we have Oranye from Ontario, who is the lead singer of a boy band that only exists in his kitchen. Welcome back, Oranye. Thank you so much. Oranye solves puzzles online as a daily slice of Oranye, which is not orange. It looks almost like orange, but it's not quite. It's Dutch for orange, apparently, is from what you were saying earlier. That's correct. Yeah. So so is are are are you Dutch? Your lineage is Dutch, maybe, or I'm I'm 50% Dutch.

Speaker 2

My uh grandprints came over in the 1950s and uh yeah, grew from nice.

Speaker

And you're a fan of the Backstreet Boys, we found out last time, and you have the the band in your kitchen is with your sons. I think it's my three sons, is what you said you were maybe gonna call it, right? Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's correct. My I have a seven-year-old son and two five-year-old sons, and we just rock out to all the classics.

Speaker

All right, and then from episode two, we have David, also known as Ransk from Denver. Welcome back, David. Thanks for having me. I think maybe we need an egg check. How many have you had today? I had zero eggs today. I've also had zero eggs today. So uh I think maybe uh Adam's got us beat this time. So um David solves puzzles online as Ranks. Um, you can find him in all the places and the basically the same places you can find Arane, but with the name ranks. And then next up from episode three, we have Bryce, a student from Virginia, who likes to listen to royalty-free music. Welcome back, Bryce. Hi, good to be here. Bryce also uses royalty free music on his YouTube channel, which is Pac Valham. Yeah, um, links in the description to all the people's channels, all the YouTube channels. And finally, from last week's episode four, we have Will from Toronto, who is apparently the only one in the group not narcissistic enough to think people want to hear what he has to say on YouTube. So welcome back, Will. And I'm including myself in that group, of course. So now this is where Will says, actually, I have a YouTube channel. I just didn't tell you about it, right? Nope. Okay. Uh Will, you're an OG survivor fan. So do you think you can survive another episode?

Speaker 1

Probably not, but we'll see.

Speaker

We'll see. All right. So, ready for the first game? All right, let's get quizzical.

Game 1 - '20 Questions'

Speaker

All right, so our first game today, we're calling this 20 questions. This works just like the classic game where you ask yes or no questions to identify the thing that I am thinking of. However, in this version, you're going to take turns asking one question at a time. So your question may help you get new information, but it might also help your competitors. So you'll want to take that into consideration when you're asking questions. And the first person to figure out what I'm thinking of gets a point. You get the most points in this game, you get a mulligan for the final round. So we're just going to go in order of the episodes you appeared in to start. So, Aranye, you get to ask the first question. And you get so 20 questions, I call it 20 questions, but we're not going to do just 20. It's going to be however many it takes for one of you to figure it out. So, Aranye, what's your question?

Speaker 2

Are you thinking of a person?

Speaker

No.

Speaker 3

All right, David, you get the next question. Is it something you might find in a typical American home?

Speaker

Yes. Uh Bryce is next.

Speaker 1

Is it larger than a microwave?

Speaker

No. No. Well.

Speaker 1

Is it something you might ingest?

Speaker

Uh no. No. Back to Aranya.

Speaker 2

Is it something you use while you're sleeping?

Speaker

You could, yeah.

Speaker 3

I could use it while sleeping. But not necessarily. Is it battery powered? No.

Speaker 1

Is it clothing?

Speaker 3

Yes.

Speaker 1

Is it something specifically for children?

Speaker 2

No. Is it something you'd wear to work? Yeah, yeah. In an office.

Speaker 3

Yeah, okay. Sure. Is it something where if you didn't wear it to work, that would be an HR problem?

Speaker

Um I'm gonna say no. It's har it's hard to do yes and no questions and not give clarifying info, but also not be misleading. Alright, Bryce, next one's for you.

Speaker 1

Is it a sock?

Speaker

Is it a sock? It is not a sock. That's a good guess.

Speaker 1

Is it something associated with a particular season?

Speaker

No.

Speaker 2

Is it a shirt?

Speaker 3

No. That was gonna be my guess. Thank you. I feel like I just gotta start guessing clothing. Is it pants?

Speaker

It's not pants. Shorts. It's not shorts. Is it a belt? No. Good thinking though.

Speaker 2

It's gotta be underwear.

Speaker

It's not underwear.

Speaker 3

Is it typically made from cloth?

Speaker

No.

Speaker 1

Is it a shoe?

Speaker

It's not a shoe.

Speaker 1

Is it a hat?

Speaker

It's not a hat. So I'm gonna I'm gonna say one thing since we're back around to the beginning. Everybody's had the same number of guesses so far. Everybody's guessing items of clothing. It's I I said yes clothing. It's not an item of clothing. But it is connected with clothing. I'm gonna say that. Because I feel like everybody got on the wrong track there. I don't know if that's helpful or more confusing, but good luck.

Speaker 2

Is it a blanket?

Speaker 3

No. It's clothing, but not an item of clothing. That makes sense. Um is it a suit? No. That's cloth anyway. Yeah, that's cloth.

Speaker 1

Is it a tie?

Speaker 3

No.

Speaker 1

Is it something the average person owns?

Speaker

Yeah. For sure.

Speaker 1

Is it a handkerchief?

Speaker

No. I don't think they listen to your question, David.

Speaker 3

They don't have to. They don't have to listen to any of my questions. That's all right. That's right.

Speaker

Yep. And now they're like, wait, which question? Uh is it glasses? It's not glasses. That's not a bad guess.

Speaker 1

Do more men than women have this?

Speaker

No.

Speaker 1

Is this something that would generally be visible if you're out in public?

Speaker

Ooh, that's a good question. Um I'm I'm gonna say oftentimes no, but it certainly could be, and it's it wouldn't be a problem. I know that's not helpful. Okay, we're back around to the beginning, so I'm gonna say this is a part of clothing. A button. It's a good guess. It's not correct, but that's a good guess.

Speaker 3

David? Part of clothing. Other things I won't say out loud. Is it a zipper?

Speaker

It's a zipper. Very good. A zipper.

Speaker 1

I was just thinking it was a zipper, but it wasn't zipper.

Speaker

So when you guys said clothing, I was like, well, yeah. But then everybody's like, shirt, pants. I'm like, ah, but a zipper. Very good, yes. So and then again, you said, is it visible? I'm like, well, I mean, a lot of times not, but there's plenty of visible zippers on things, and that's like a jacket would have a zipper, you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But like most of the time you think, oh, a zipper on pants, right? So all right, perfect. So David gets a point for that one. Very good. All right, for the next question, we're gonna switch up the order. So it's gonna be David, Will, Aranye, Bryce this time. Okay, David, will, aranye, and Bryce. And I've got another item in my head. I've thought of another item. All right, David, you get the first question.

Speaker 3

Is it found in a typical American home?

Speaker 1

Uh no.

Speaker 3

Will's up next.

Speaker 1

Is it larger than a microwave?

Speaker

Yes. Then aranye.

Speaker 2

Would you see this at work in an office?

Speaker

Um, not typically, no. No price.

Speaker 1

Is it commonly seen outside?

Speaker

It can be. Um anywhere, really. Yeah. Inside and outside, just as equally, I would say. But all right, back to David. Is it alive? Yes.

Speaker 1

Is this something most people see regularly?

Speaker

I mean not not not not frequently, but it's unlikely that most people in the US will not have would would would would have not seen it. I mean, yeah. But is it an animal? Yes.

Speaker 1

Is it an elephant?

Speaker

It's not an elephant.

Speaker 3

This might be hard to answer, but just like basically if someone thinks of a zoo animal, would this be like something they'd go to the zoo to see? Like I know zoos have all sorts of things, but like No. Okay. No. No. That was a quick no, by the way. It was.

Speaker 1

Is this something that generally lives in cities?

Speaker

Yes.

Speaker 2

Is it a rat?

Speaker

It's not a rat no, it's not a rat.

Speaker 1

Is it a dog?

Speaker

Nope. Alright, so we're back around to the beginning, so I'm gonna say that I think the animal question is throwing everybody off. So it is technically an animal, but that's maybe confusing. So I'll say that. Okay, David.

Speaker 3

I'm gonna ask the question I asked out of order, which is is it a mammal?

Speaker

It is a mammal, yes. Ranya looks very confused.

Speaker 1

I'm also fairly confused.

Speaker

That's fine.

Speaker 1

Is this uh does this thing hunt typically?

Speaker

Does it hunt? Uh I d um that's funny. I don't actually know specifically if this particular animal um likes to hunt or not.

Speaker 1

So do you want me to ask a different question?

Speaker

I'm gonna guess I'm gonna guess I'm I'm gonna guess no. Um, but but it could.

Speaker 1

I think that answers the question. I think that's good.

Speaker

Yeah, Aranya's like, no, that just made it more confusing.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna take a guess. Is it the Sasquatch?

Speaker

No.

Speaker 2

A bear?

Speaker

Nope. Alright, so I'm just gonna save you guys from guessing lots of animals. We're gonna say technically it's an animal. Because it's a person. Which is an animal. So you don't just keep guessing animals, I'm gonna say it's a person. Alright. Back to David.

Speaker 3

That explains a lot, because I was thinking human was the only choice, but you said not in the typical American home, so well, this specific one. Yeah, that makes sense then. Is this a celebrity? Yes.

Speaker 1

Is this a woman?

Speaker

No.

Speaker 2

Is this person an American?

Speaker

Yes. Actually, hold on, let me double check. I have I have Wikipedia pulled up because I had a feeling there'd be questions that I wouldn't know the answer to. No, sorry. I I'm well no not according to Wikipedia.

Speaker 1

Is he an actor?

Speaker 3

Yes. Is he a comedic actor?

Speaker

Um sometimes, but not usually not not primarily, I would say. But sometimes.

Speaker 1

Is he older than 40 years old?

Speaker

Yes.

Speaker 2

Has this person won an Oscar?

Speaker

Ooh, that's a very good question. No, no Oscar.

Speaker 1

Is he from Canada?

Speaker 3

Yes. Is his most famous role from a movie or a or sorry, from a movie? I can't say or.

Speaker

Yes. I mean you can, but then it would you I wouldn't tell you which one. I realize that. Is it a movie, a TV show, or a book? Yes, okay. Yes, movie.

Speaker 1

Was he in a movie released in 2025?

Speaker

Oh for sure, I think. I mean, certainly, yes. Yes.

Speaker 3

Remember, he's bigger than a microwave, so I'm just gonna guess.

Speaker 2

Jim Carrey.

Speaker

Good guess, not correct though.

Speaker 2

Ryan Reynolds.

Speaker 3

Incorrect. So most actor many actors have a name they go by when acting that isn't their given name. So is that true of him? Does he go by a different name than his given name?

Speaker

He does not. He goes by his given name. That's a good question.

Speaker 1

Is he well known for anything outside of acting?

Speaker

I I wouldn't say not well known. Not well known. He is known for other things by some people, but not if if I named this person, you would all say actor.

Speaker 2

Ryan Gosling.

Speaker

Nope. Incorrect. Alright, David. Alright. You got you guys got it. I mean, you're you're so close. You got you know what you're looking for. You just yeah. Is it Robert De Niro? No, no.

Speaker 1

Has he also done TV acting in addition to movie acting?

Speaker

Yes, some. Um, but not much. I don't know that there's been any uh regular, you know, not on a regular basis that I know of.

Speaker 2

Is this person still alive?

Speaker

Yes.

Speaker 1

Does he primarily do action movies? Yes.

Speaker 3

Is it Keanu Reeves?

Speaker

It is Keanu Reeves! Very good, David. Alright. Well, I was planning to do three of these. David won the first two. So I think David's got this game in the bag. Very good. David, congratulations. You have earned a mulligan for the final elimination round. Very good. That was a tough game. I knew it was gonna be difficult. But my third one was gonna be a shadow. So that was probably gonna take you guys a while. Is it a thing? Depends on who you ask. Because it's not like a physical object, but it kind of is. Different sizes. Yeah, that would have been fun. We're on our 10th episode already, and we've had some great contestants, and we've got even more to come. We're getting ready to record another batch of episodes. Thanks again to everyone who helps support the show in every way. We really appreciate it.

Game 2 - 'Missing Link'

Speaker

All right, now on to game number two. We're calling this the missing link. In this round, I will read a series of standard trivia questions. Your goal is not to give the answer to those questions, but rather to figure out the link between the answers. For example, if I said the element with atomic number eight, oxygen, the shape of a basketball hoop, a circle, and the only number that's not positive or negative, zero, you don't answer oxygen a circle or zero, but your answer would be can be represented by the letter O in that situation. So you're trying to give me the link between the answers, not the answers themselves. And you can buzz in at any time to guess, even before all the questions have been read. So if after the first question you want to go for it, you can. But if you get it wrong, then you can't answer again until everyone's made a guess. If everyone does make a guess. So you don't necessarily want to jump in too early, but all right, you're giving me the link between the answers. Here's the first question. In the popular rhyme, this is what we all scream for. All right, the next one is the most widely available canned meat. Third one is a golfer's equipment. Alright, number four. The eldest son of Jacob and Leah in the Old Testament. Anyone know the connection yet? Nope, not yet. Alright, and our fifth question is Mark the Shark, who formerly owned the Dallas Mavericks. What is the connection between all the answers? Oh, Bryce?

Speaker 1

Sandwiches.

Speaker

Sandwiches. Very good, Bryce. We had ice cream, tuna, club, reuben, and Cuban. Good work, good work. Okay, on to the next one. The first question. Nemo, for example. Okay, number two, woods on the golf course. Oh. Will's jumping in early. What do you got? Animals? Nope, not animals. Good, good guess, good guess. All right, so you're you're just listening now until until uh others miss it as well. All right, the next one. A snowman's proboscis. Oh, oranye.

Speaker 2

Things related to orange.

Speaker

Orange, yes. I I could have said oranye as well. Things related to orange.

Speaker 2

I'd be embarrassed if I didn't get that.

Speaker

That's funny. I didn't even realize that until you buzzed in. I was like, oh, right, oraner. Yes. So we had clownfish, we had a tiger, and then a carrot, and then the last two where he hates Mondays but loves lasagna's Garfield, and it gets hollowed out in October, which is a pumpkin. All right. Next one. Question one: something you read while driving. Okay, and then Roman God associated with Valentine's Day. All right, and then number three is where you would find QWERTY. Ooh, Bryce.

Speaker 1

Things with arrows.

Speaker

They have arrows. Very good, Bryce. Yes, a road sign, Cupid, a keyboard. The other two were a diagram representing a sequence of operations, which is a flow chart, and animated sitcom about a secret agent that ran for 14 years on FX, which is Archer. Which Archer in the show doesn't have arrows, but an archer has arrows. So this is our last one. First question another name for a clean. Meaning, lady. Okay, question two, a large group of fish. Number three, a nation's maritime defense force. People with uniforms? Ooh, good guess, David, but no, that's not correct. Not people with uniforms. Alright. And the fourth question is the type of girls that Jerry Hallowell and Victoria Beckham used to be. Oh, uh Aranye. Things related to old? Old, yes. Old made, old school, old navy, old spice. And the last one was another name for a person who shouts a lot, which would be a yeller. Old yeller. Alright, perfect. Well, after that one, we have a tie between Bryce and Aranye. So we're gonna give Bryce and Aranye both a mulligan. So basically, uh everybody but Will has a mulligan for the first. How that ends up. Um, so good luck, Will. Alright, well, this is the time when we would normally do the listener question, but of course, we don't do a new listener question on our final round episodes. So you actually have one more week to answer last week's listener question. So I'll briefly give it to you again quick. It was a story. A woman walked up to a man behind a counter and handed him a book. He looked at it and said, That will be $4. She paid him and walked out without the book. He saw her leave but did not call her back. Why? If you think you know the answer, go to quizzical.fm and click on the leave a voicemail button to submit your answer in audio form, or you can send us an email to people at quizzical.fm and you could be next week's People's Champion. And if you just can't go another week without a new puzzle, you can always head over to Patreon where we will be posting another visual trivia round, as I mentioned. We're going to be posting those semi-regularly over there. Some stuff that doesn't really work in podcast form. It'll either be pictures or videos or something. So if you need more trivia, go to patreon.com slash quizzicalfm or just go to quizzical.fm and click on the support button, and that will send you over there as well. And if you have a trivia question you'd like to ask me, or just anything else you want to say, you can also go to quizzical.fm, click on the leave a voicemail button, and send us a message that way, and you could appear on an upcoming show.

Game 3 - 'Back to the Front'

Speaker

So today's elimination round is called Back to the Front. Every answer will be a palindrome made of two words. The clue will describe each of the two words, and your answer has to be a palindrome. Now it's not necessarily two words that are the one is the reverse of the other one. It could be like a three-letter word and a five-letter word that makes you know an eight-letter palindrome. So, but it is, they are all two words, and they will all be a palindrome. And as I said, this game will be played spelling B style, so we will take turns, but if you miss a question, the next person has the opportunity to answer, and if they get it right, you are eliminated. And if two people get it wrong and the third person gets it right, they eliminate two people. And of course, David, Bryce, and Arane have their mulligans, so it will keep you in the game after being eliminated once. All right. So I'll have I'll give you an example. Here's an example question: a tortilla folded and filled with meat and cheese plus a feline would be a taco cat. So there's gonna be a plus in all of the clues that kind of gives you the two pieces, the two words. So uh we're just gonna go in the order that you guys are on my screen. So, David, you are up first. Uh, a contest of speed plus the most common form of personal transportation. A race car. A race car, very good. All right, Will, you're up next. A lack of intelligence plus a combination of water and dirt. Dumb mud? Dumb of mud, very good. Bryce, next one's for you. Chicken of the sea, plus a bolt's other half. Tuna nut. Tuna nut, very good. Arane, the king of the jungle, plus what you need to regularly change in your car. Lion oil. Very good. Alright, back to David. The final frontier, plus what you get when you hold down shift on a keyboard. Space caps. Space caps, very good. Will a dangerous feat performed by an actor, plus what planters sells. Stunt nuts. Stunt nuts, very good. Bryce. A man-made chlorinated body of water, plus the shape of two can Sam's cereal. Cool loop, very good. Alright, Arane. A measure of intelligence plus a California football team. Smart Rams? Smart Rams, very good. Alright, David. First name of basketball player Rodman, plus what you did if you broke the Ten Commandments. Dennis Sin. Dennis Sin, very good. Will. People who usually wear scrubs plus speedy transport by foot.

Speaker 1

Nurses run?

Speaker

Yep, nurses run, very good. That one's a little tricky because it's a longer word and a shorter word. Well done. Alright, Bryce. Profound wickedness plus a common martini garnish. Evil Olive. Evil Olive, very good. You guys are good at these. I thought for sure we'd have lost a couple of you by now. Alright. Uh Arane. Last name of fashion designer Christian plus what C3PO is. Dior droid. Dior Droid, very good. Alright, David. A South American pack animal plus a large shopping center. Llama mall. Llama mall, very good. Alright. Well, what the white rabbit perpetually is in Alice's Wonderland, plus a type of material that conducts electricity and heat well.

Speaker 1

Late metal?

Speaker

Late metal? Wow, you guys are good at these. Alright. Bryce. A large cooking device plus the uppermost point. Gonna give you a couple seconds to come up with it if you don't have it. No, I have to use my mulligan. Alright, Aranye. Do you know it? Hot top. Hot top. Alright, good job, Arane. So that's gonna be Bryce's mulligan. He's lost his mulligan. Alright. Uh on to David. Latin for therefore, plus what Shrek is.

Speaker 3

Ergo ogre. Which is a tongue twister.

Speaker

It is. Alright, well, lacking companions, plus a brand name of acetaminophen. Alright, a couple seconds. No, don't have it.

Speaker 1

Bryce?

Speaker

Do you know what, Bryce? No. No? Ron, yeah, you could knock both of them out if you know it. Doesn't look like he has it. Knocking companionship. Knocking companions. No.

Speaker 3

David? Lonely Tylenol.

Speaker

Lonely Tylenol. Very good. Which means we've lost Bryce and Will, and Arane's lost his uh mulligan. So we have David with his mulligan, and we have Aranye with no mulligan. Alright, and this question is for Aranye. Something you can use to reflect on your life, plus the outer edge of an object. A mirror rim. Mirror rim. Very good. Good poll. Because you looked like you had no idea, and then all of a sudden it was there. Very good.

Speaker 2

It's a tough palindrome. That was great.

Speaker

That is a tough one. Well, I put the harder ones later down, so yep, yep. That was the idea. Alright, David. Italian for love plus Italian for Rome. Amore Roma. Amore Roma. Alright, Arane. This is our last question. Then we have to go to the tiebreaker if David can't knock you out with this one. Produced by making lines with a pen or pencil, plus continuing in a forward direction.

Speaker 2

I know it's draw and word. But what's in the middle? It might just be draw and word, isn't it?

Speaker

No, that's not. David, you can win it if you know it.

Speaker 3

Sorry, you gave it a you gave it to me. Draw forward.

Speaker

Oh, it's not draw forward. That's not a palindrome. Okay. Oh, Aranye survives to do the pie breaker. It's drawn onward. Oh, right. Drawn. Produced by makes drawn. Not draw. Yep. Yep. Yep. Drawn onward. All right. So with that, we have David and Aranye, and we got to go to our tiebreaker question. All right. So you're going to need uh something to write on because you're going to write down your answer and hold it up. So that way we know you're not cheating. That's what I was planning to do. I was planning to cheat. So you can write on any scrap of paper. All right, are we ready? Often cited as the longest palindromic novel, Dr. Awkward and Olsen and Oslo by Lawrence Levine, written in 1986, contains how many words? This is a novel that's a whole big long palindrome. How many words are in this book? Closest person will be our winner. And it's not without going over, it's just closest. So all right. Do you both have an answer?

Speaker 3

Yep.

Speaker

Have it written down? Yeah. All right. Go ahead and hold your answers up so we can see them. We've got 20,000 from David and 25,000 from Aranye, I believe. Is that correct? Yes. Yeah. All right. So if it's more than 22,500, then Aranye will win. And the answer is 31,594. Very good. And with that, Aranye is our new reigning quizzical champion. Congratulations, Aranye. Very good.

Speaker 2

It's a win for Canada, Will.

Speaker 3

Yeah. There you go.

Speaker

Win for Canada. And so Aranye will receive a Quizzical Champions card deck, which means that your next game night you can subtly tell all your friends that you're smarter than them, because you're a champion. And then, of course, direct them to go listen to the show themselves. Just like everyone listening should do the same and direct people listen to the show. So thank you to all our contestants and congratulations again to Aranye. Join us next week as two more competitors will match wits for a chance at being crowned the next Quizzical champion. Remember, trivia is just wonder with something on the line. I'm Scott, and this has been Quizzical.
