SpeakerWho was the only US president to have a baby while in office? The answer to that at the end of the show. Welcome to Quizzical, the trivia show where we reward knowledge and punish hesitation. I'm Scott Strosahl, and joining me today are two competitors who absolutely know things, just not always on demand. This is the first of four head-to-head matchups, the winners of which will face off in a final round in a few weeks. In today's games, we'll break out our cooking dictionary and movie thesaurus, and along the way, we'll also crown another people's champion with the answer to last week's listener question. So play along, pause if you need to. This is a safe space for nearly right answers. We've got questions, we've got correct answers mostly, and we've got at least one fact today that will make you say, I heard this on a podcast once. Now let's meet our two contestants and get to the trivia. First up, we have Nick from New Zealand. Welcome, Nick. Hey, how are we done? Uh so you know I have to ask, of course, what's the future like, because it's tomorrow there.
Speaker 2Oh, I mean, if I told you, it wouldn't end well.
SpeakerRight. You don't want to have any spoilers for the future, right?
Speaker 2Yeah, I could I could tell you tomorrow's word or answer, but then that wouldn't make a good video, would it?
SpeakerThat's true. So I understand you know a lot about the Marvel cinematic universe. Yep. Or you claim to, anyways.
Speaker 2I was yeah, I was on a um another YouTuber's live stream podcast a few years ago. He did a Who Wants to be a Millionaire version of the MCU, and I got but it was for a hundred US dollars, and I got all the way to the 15 question with only using one lifeline. Nice.
SpeakerThat's my claim to fame. So the question is which superhero is your favorite? Or maybe villain? I don't know. Spider-Man. Spider-Man, okay. Spider-Man. Been a fan since I was a kid, don't know why. So if you were a superhero, what would your power be? And you can't say shooting webs, because that's cheating since Spider-Man's your favorite.
Speaker 2Ooh, that's a tough one. I mean, having Batman's power or Iron Man's power being wretched would be nice.
SpeakerYeah, yeah, that's that's true. Because that would be useful in other ways besides just being a superhero, right? Yes. Nice. Yep, okay, cool. And next up is Luca, a high school student from Iowa. Welcome, Luca. Hey Scott. So you are the youngest contestant we've had so far. I don't know. Maybe maybe we'll have a younger contestant in the future. But uh, so you the it's your claim to fame now. You're the youngest contestant on this podcast. Uh but you play football and track. Yes. And so you must think that you're fast.
Speaker 1Uh, I hope so.
SpeakerYou try to be fast. You try to be fast. We'll go with that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think I think you probably succeed. But yeah, uh, any any big plans for after high school? I know you're not quite there yet.
Speaker 1Uh I mean my current plans are probably to go to Iowa State and go into mechanical engineering. Nice, nice.
SpeakerSo, and it's good that you say your current plans, because usually Yeah, there's a lot of there's a lot of space between here and there. Right, right. Yep. Cool. All right. Well, now that we all know each other, are you guys ready for our first game? Yes, I am.
Game 1 - 'Shift+F7'
SpeakerFor round one, we're starting with a game called Shift F7. Do you guys know what Shift F7 is the shortcut for? No. No. It's the Microsoft shortcut for the thesaurus. So uh I've taken the name of a movie and replaced the words with synonyms. It's like you put the movie through a thesaurus. Yep. You just simply need to name the movie. So I'll give you an example. Pure fabrication would be pulp fiction. Puree pulp fabrication fiction. Got it?
Speaker 1Yep.
SpeakerBuzzing to answer, but if you get it wrong, your opponent will have a chance to steal. Luca, your buzzer sounds like. And Nicholas, your buzzer sounds like. Alright, any questions before we start this one? Nope. Let's get into it. Alright, question one. Revolutionary lacking in occasion. These are tricky. That's it's okay. Hope Nick's doing a little better than I am. He's thinking. I can hear the wheels spinning from here. I smell the smoke. Alright, I'm gonna say no one gets that one. That's okay. That's okay. Um it was Rebel without a cause. Revolutionary, a rebel. Lacking an occasion without a cause. These are hard. That's okay. Alright, the next one. A dozen trips around the sun as a bond servant. Luca. Twelve years a slave? Twelve years a slave, very good. A dozen trips around the sun is 12 years. Very good. Currently judgment day. Oh, Luca. Thor Ragnarok? Sorry, that's incorrect. Good guess. Good guess. Nick, you got a guess?
Speaker 2Uh currently Judgment Day. No, I don't have a guess.
SpeakerIt was Apocalypse Now.
Speaker 1I don't know why I thought Thor uh currently was a play on Thursday, like Thursday.
SpeakerYeah, yeah. Gotcha. You're you're thinking too hard about it, I think.
Speaker 2Yeah. You are, because for me it's Friday.
unknownRight, right.
SpeakerThat's true. It is Friday for him. Yeah. Alright, next question. The sorcerer from Australia. Nick. The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Oz, very good. Now, did you get that one because Australia's closer to you?
Speaker 2Well, we we do call it Oz, so. But I would say yes, but I don't want to sound too too smug.
SpeakerYep. Alright, good. Next one. The conglomerate hits in reverse.
Speaker 2Forgot to have my brain food this morning.
SpeakerOr maybe the kingdom hits in reverse. These are definitely easier in retrospect, so.
Speaker 2Yeah, once you know the answer, it's easy.
SpeakerOh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Alright. No one's gonna get that one either. It was the Empire Strikes Back. Oh they are easy once you know 'em. Yep. Alright, that's okay. Here we go. Next one. The Union of My Preeminent Companion.
Speaker 2Partner or Brother?
SpeakerYou're getting close. I think we're gonna say no one gets that one. It was my best friend's wedding. My best friend's wedding. Never heard of it. Oh, you never heard of it? Okay. Well, then you weren't gonna get that one. Yeah. Alright, that's okay. Next question. The non-illuminated armored warrior. Nick? The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight, very good. I got that right as he did. Yep, you were just a little late on the buzzer, Luca. Yeah. Alright, this is the last one. Luca, you have to get this one right to force a tiebreaker. Perfect. Alright. Missing in the company of a gale.
Speaker 2Company of a gale. Oh, Nick. Gone with the wind?
SpeakerGone with the wind. Very good. Very good. Yes. That's a good pull. I don't know when it came from. Alright, well, great job, both of you, but especially good job to Nick, who is one step closer to making the final. And Luca, you'll have to win the next game to force a tiebreaker and keep your hopes alive. Perfect. Alright, that was good. That's a hard game. You guys did really good. That was a tough one.
Listener Question
SpeakerAlright, now it's time for the answer to last week's listener question, or actually the question from two weeks ago, because last week was the final round. As a refresher, the question was: a woman walked up to a man behind a counter and handed him a book. He looked at it and said, That will be $4. She paid him and walked out without the book. He saw her leave but did not call her back. And what was going on here was she was returning an overdue library book. So the fine was $4 because it was overdue. The librarian said it'll be $4. She paid the fine and left without the book because she was returning the book. And this week's winner selected from those that submitted correct answers is Coffee Darling. I'm gonna assume that's not their government name, but Coffee Darling. Well done. If you figured it out and didn't win this week, good job as well. We'll have another question in just a second that you can try to be next week's winner. But Coffee Darling is this week's people's champion. Well done, Coffee Darling. And now for this week's question, this is another associations type question. I'm gonna give you four things, and you just need to tell me how they are connected or what they have in common. And the four items this week are a ship, a clock, a card game, and a monkey. What do a ship, a clock, a card game, and a monkey have in common? If you think you know, send us a message to people at quizzical.fm or go to quizzical.fm and click on the leave a voicemail button and you can submit your answer in audio form. And you could be next week's People's Champion.
Game 2 - 'A Watched Pot'
SpeakerAnd with that, it's time for our second game. Our second game today is called A Watched Pot. This game will be questions about cooking. Do either of you do much cooking? I could cook some scrambled eggs. Some scrambled eggs? Hey, that's good. That's good.
Speaker 2Yeah, I cook, but having food knowledge is a different story to be able to being able to cook.
SpeakerWell, that's okay. You know, we'll we'll see how you do. So this will be a kind of a fairly standard trivia type round. I'll ask a question, you'll answer it. Um, and we'll take turns on this one so you can put the buzzers down and feel free to talk it out before you answer. You can kind of think out loud. Uh, but if you miss it, your opponent will get a chance to steal again. Any questions before we start this one? None. Nope. It's pretty straightforward. Luca, the first question's for you. Perfect. Used to thicken sauces, what is made by adding equal parts, flour, and fat? A roux? A roux, very good, yes. Do you know how to spell roux? You don't have to know how to spell, but do you know how to spell? R-U-E? No, it's R-O-U-X, which is why I asked, because it's weird.
Speaker 1I only know that I've made mac and cheese before. I made one of those for that.
SpeakerThere you go. Okay. Nick, next one's for you. For what ingredient would you enlist the help of a mycophile? And that's M Y C O file. What ingredient? For a micophile.
unknownYeah.
SpeakerWhat ingredient would a mycophile help you with?
Speaker 2So I'm assuming it's some sort of kitchen utensil? But my assumption is hopefully it's not a Americanized thing, because I'd have no clue. Um I'm drawing a blank. I got no idea.
SpeakerDo you want to take a guess? Just guess an ingredient, any random ingredient? Butter. Butter. Butter is incorrect. Good guess. Luca, can you steal?
Speaker 1Um I think I've heard of a microphile. I don't know about these micophiles, but I guess my best guess would be cheese, maybe.
SpeakerCheese, another good guess. Also incorrect. Uh a mycophile is someone who is into mushrooms. Oh, well, I'm not one of those people, so I would not have known that.
Speaker 2I despise mushrooms. No wonder I wouldn't know.
SpeakerOh. Neither one of you likes mushrooms, huh? Well, I I am definitely a mycophile. I definitely enjoy mushrooms. Alright, Luca, next one's for you. Which of the following is an acceptable substitute for oil in quickbreads? Milk, water, or applesauce?
Speaker 1I don't know what those are, but um Applesauce feels just random enough. It might be meant to be random. And water and oil are like the opposite.
SpeakerSo milk maybe? Sorry, milk is incorrect. Nick, can you steal? You got a 50-50 shot here.
Speaker 2Quick breads. So I'm gonna take Luca's logic and go for the odd one or the strange one and go applesauce.
SpeakerApplesauce is correct, yes. Really? Very good. You live and learn if I make any quick breads. Yeah, next question is for Nick. Blanching vegetables means you are doing what to them? Peeling, frying, boiling, or rinsing?
Speaker 2Peeling, frying, boiling, or rinsing. I've heard it before. In my head I've got it down to a fifty-fifty. What I don't want to say is guess I'm gonna need another answer and get it right.
SpeakerOh right, okay. Okay, that's that's fair. But I mean, my fifty-fifty could be completely wrong. Right. You you could put him on the wrong direction too by giving your fifty-fifty back.
Speaker 2I could, but I'm gonna go with uh frying.
SpeakerFrying. Ooh. It's incorrect. And Luca acts like maybe he knows this one and seems excited.
Speaker 1I actually watched my fair share of cooking videos during COVID. So I think I might have a guess on this one. Is it boiling?
SpeakerIt is boiling. Very good. It is boiling. So if you're blanching, do you want to explain what blanching is? Do you know Luca? No idea. I just know they boil it. Okay, so basically you throw vegetables into boiling water just briefly, you know, for like a minute or two, and then you take them out and throw them in cold water. And so you start to cook them and then stop the cooking. Yeah.
Speaker 2That was my other option.
SpeakerI was tossing up and down between. Nice. Okay. Alright, Luca. Next one's for you. Caramelization is the process of browning what substance? Sugar. Sugar is correct. Very good.
Speaker 1Who knew this would be the category I'd be good at?
SpeakerYeah, who knew? Alright, Nick, next one's for you. Before the invention of baking powder and baking soda, what was normally used to make cakes rise?
Speaker 2I don't do much baking, so the only thing I can think of that makes things rise would be yeast. But I don't know if that's correct, but I'll go with it.
SpeakerIt's going with yeast. And that is correct, yes, that's right. Good guess. Yep. Uh they also sometimes used uh potash or pearl ash, or even just beat the eggs a whole bunch to get air into them, and that would kind of sort of make it rise a little bit, but yeast is the main thing, yep. Now they use baking powder and baking soda to make things rise. Alright, very good. Next question is for Luca. What kind of nut is used to make traditional pesto?
Speaker 1I should know this one. I feel like I shouldn't have said I should know this because now I'm gonna say a stupid answer. But I feel like I knew this back in the day. Um I mean just throw something out there, I guess. Like a walnut? I don't know.
SpeakerWalnut is incorrect. No. Nick, can you steal this one?
Speaker 2If I get the answer right, I can steal it, but I have no idea. But my first thought was cashews.
SpeakerCashews, cashews. Also a good guess. Also wrong. No, it's pine nuts. I need to watch some more cooking videos. Alright, this is the last one. This one's for Nick. Nick, if you get this right, you will force a tiebreaker.
Speaker 2No pressure.
SpeakerOtherwise, Luca will win this game and force a tiebreaker game. So, either way, there's gonna be a tiebreaker after this question. Alright, Nick. What small olive-like buds are a prominent ingredient in chicken picata?
Speaker 2Olive-like bud. Well, you gotta guess an olive-like bud?
SpeakerNo. No, not one at all. No guess. Alright. Luca, can you steal?
Speaker 1Well. I was gonna say something stupid like garlic at first, and then I realized it's not like an olive at all. Um olive-like.
SpeakerA peanut? Is that like an olive? I don't know. It's not a bad guess, but nope, incorrect. The answer is a caper. Mediterranean thing. Um, they're kind of salty, and yeah. There we go. Alright, well, great job, both of you. For especially for people that don't do any cooking, you guys did pretty good. Thank you. Um, and with that, you've each won one game, so we're gonna have to go to a tiebreaker. So the tiebreaker game is the dream team. There were 12 members of the 1992 US men's Olympic basketball team nicknamed the Dream Team. You guys familiar with the Dream Team? I am. Nope.
Speaker 1Oh, I might have a little bit of advantage of you.
SpeakerUm, you have a little disadvantage not being from the U.S., but this was a pretty famous thing back in the day. We're going to go back and forth naming them, and the first person to get a wrong answer or repeat an answer is out. So, Luca, as the winner of the second game, you have to start. Perfect. Um, so remember this is 1992 basketball, Nick. So if you know any famous basketball players from the early 90s, you can always just guess one of those, okay? Uh I'll start star us off with uh Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan is correct. Nick Shaquille O'Neal. Shaquille O'Neal. Oh, he was he was like the first person that didn't make it, basically. He was the first one out.
Speaker 2My second guess would have been Kareem Abdullah Bar. Is he part of that time?
SpeakerNope, nope. I think he's a little too old for the 92 Dream team. Yep. So it would it was Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, John Stockton, Carl Malone, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullen, David Robinson, Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler, and the one college player was Christian Leitner. Alright, well, close one, but after two games, Luca is moving on to the final round at the end of the month. Congratulations to Luca. Thank you to Nick for playing. You guys both did
Outro
Speakera great job. Join us next week as two more competitors match wits for a chance at being crowned quizzical champion. But before we go, the answer to the question I asked at the beginning: Who was the last, first and last, U.S. president to have a baby while in office? Do you guys have any idea? Abraham Lincoln. Next up. Nope. Nope. The last and also first was Grover Cleveland. Yeah, I probably wanted to guess that. His wife Frances gave birth to their daughter Esther in 1893 inside the White House. They gave birth in the White House. And Esther remains the only presidential child born there and was nicknamed the White House Baby. So now you know, Grover Cleveland is the only U.S. president to have a baby while in office, at least as of when we're recording this. It's a fact that makes you sound prepared, even if you're not. And that's it for this week. And remember, every fact begins as someone wondering. I'm Scott, and this has been Quizzical.
